In my case, yes! Many of these books that \u201csparked joy\u201d for me in 2016 have wonderful covers and titles that drew me in \u2013 and delivered!<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Light between oceans : a novel<\/em> \/ by M.L. Stedman. This author\u2019s first novel, set on an island and coastal community in Western <a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Light-between-Oceans.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-860\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-860\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Light-between-Oceans.jpg\" alt=\"light-between-oceans\" width=\"79\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Australia, is so well written, with great characters and an interesting setting. I\u2019m eager to see the movie!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>The little Paris bookshop : a novel<\/em> \/ by Nina George. This is totally my kind of book \u2013 a pilgrimage of sorts for the characters in the book, with delicious descriptions of Paris and the French countryside. And a happy ending!<a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Litte-Paris-Bookshop.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-861\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-861\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Litte-Paris-Bookshop.jpg\" alt=\"litte-paris-bookshop\" width=\"80\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Pastrix: the cranky, beautiful faith of a sinner and saint<\/em> \/ by Nadia Bolz-Weber. \u00a0Nadia\u2019s photo on the front, showing her tattoos, would hardly make you believe she was a Lutheran minister &#8211; I loved her story, a wonderful mix of sacred and profane.<a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pastrix.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-862\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-862\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pastrix.jpg\" alt=\"pastrix\" width=\"80\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Mary Coin: a novel<\/em> \/ by Marisa Silver. This novel, based on the famous photograph of a migrant mother taken by Dorothy Lange during the Depression, is elegant and beautifully written. And it will make you run to your computer to find out more about the real people and story (which to me is always the sign of a good book).<a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Mary-Coin.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-863\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-863\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Mary-Coin.jpg\" alt=\"mary-coin\" width=\"80\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>The ditchdigger\u2019s daughters: a black family\u2019s astonishing success story<\/em> \/ by Yvonne Thornton. This is a wonderful story about an amazing family \u2013 the six daughters of Donald Thornton, who had dreams for his daughters to be the best they can be, including being a part of a music group, and going to college. Yvonne, the author, became an obstetrician, <a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Ditchdiggers-daughters.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-864\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-864\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Ditchdiggers-daughters.jpg\" alt=\"ditchdiggers-daughters\" width=\"79\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>beating many odds. This book is entertaining and inspirational.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> *<em>Coming home<\/em> \/ by Rosamunde Pilcher. This classic was published over 20 years ago, but I reread it this past year and truly loved it all over again. Taking place in 1940s Cornwall, it follows the story of Judith, and the Carey-Lewis family who absorb her into their family. The very British details make for a perfect book to read with a cup of tea next to you.<a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Coming-home.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-865\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-865\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Coming-home.jpg\" alt=\"coming-home\" width=\"73\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> *<em>The Kashmir Shawl<\/em> \/ Rosie Thomas. I read this book on our train ride to and from Washington D.C. I was enthralled with the setting of this book, as I\u2019ve always wanted to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Kashmir-shawl.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-866\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-866\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Kashmir-shawl.jpg\" alt=\"kashmir-shawl\" width=\"78\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Kashmir, as well as the story and characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Hotel on the corner of Bitter and Sweet : a novel<\/em> \/\u00a0 by Jamie Ford. Mostly taking place in Seattle, this story of a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl, alternating during World War II and present times, is entertaining while telling a story of a period of time in history that will hopefully never be repeated, of <a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Hotel-on-the-corner-of-bitter-and-sweet.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-867\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-867\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Hotel-on-the-corner-of-bitter-and-sweet.jpg\" alt=\"hotel-on-the-corner-of-bitter-and-sweet\" width=\"80\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>putting American citizens into internment camps, just because of their ethnic background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Me before you<\/em> \/ by JoJo Moyes. Initially I dismissed this book as \u201cchick-lit\u201d but I have to admit I really loved this book \u2013 so much that I would wake up in the middle of the night <a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Me-before-you.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-868\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-868\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Me-before-you.jpg\" alt=\"me-before-you\" width=\"79\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>thinking of the characters. While the characters didn\u2019t do what I wanted them to do, I forgave them, and understood why they did what they did. The dialogue and interior lives portrayed in this book are excellent (and full of humor, despite the serious subject).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">*<em>Without a map: a memoir<\/em> \/ by Meredith Hall. I remember when this book, by a Maine author, came out and received good reviews, so when I saw it at the Long Island Community Library book sale, I grabbed it. This is one of the best-written books I\u2019ve read in a long time \u2013 I had a hard time putting it down. Meredith becomes pregnant at 16 during a time in that her family land hometown in New Hampshire shunned her \u2013 how far we\u2019ve come, and how fortunate we are that Meredith wrote this book.<a href=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Without-a-map.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-869\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-869\" src=\"https:\/\/liclblog.townoflongisland.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Without-a-map.jpg\" alt=\"without-a-map\" width=\"77\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Happy New Year from the Long Island Community Library \u2013 may 2017 bring you many wonderful books!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you judge a book by its cover?
